Sawyer -- Leader or Con Man?

I listened to The Transmission's recent Long Con podcast and they got into a discussion of Sawyer and his evolution. It led to speculation about what we can expect from Island-stranded Season 5 Sawyer and so I ask:

This is one of the things I'm really interested to see. Will Sawyer step up and assume the role Hurley created for him or will he remain an Every Man for Himself and allow Juliet to take charge? Who else might assume leadership? Rose?

Will Clementine Grow Up To Blow Up Sawyer?

Is this bit of dialogue foreshadowing of Sawyer's possible post-Island future?

Cassidy: What makes a girl that went to Sunday School scared of the cops?
Kate: A few months ago I killed my stepfather and I escaped from the marshal who arrested me for it.
Cassidy: Why?
Kate: Because he was a bad guy.
. . .
Kate: What, you want to help me?
Cassidy: Absolutely.
Kate: Why?
Cassidy: I fell in love with the wrong guy. And then I gave him my life savings. He conned me, and embarrassed me. He was a bad guy.

On a more serious note, I wonder if Cassidy will see Kate's "rescue" from the Island and contact her? That could lead to some interesting girl talk.

Best Con Ever!

Hurley's banishment scam is my favorite con in the history of LOST. Hurley is the man!

Will Kate Ever Learn About Sawyer and Ana Lucia?

No picture on this one. I just couldn't bear to look at it. So any bets on if/when/where Kate might learn that Sawyer lost his gun to Ana Lucia in a roll, roll, roll in the hay? It's hard to see how she could get upset about a one afternoon stand with a now dead girl, but Kate and her romances are not the most logical things in the world. Add raging pregnancy hormones on top (mere speculation, not spoil-ed) and this could explain how Kate would end up leaving the Island with Jack.

Will We Ever Meet The Bad Twin?

Still waiting for the Bad Twin payoff. I'm glad I got
it from the library instead of buying. Will there ever be an
actual set of twins on LOST (other than the seabilly boat)?
I'm still hoping Libby will turn out to be a twin. Maybe Kate
is pregnant with twins.

Of course, all the twin stuff could be written off as we all
have our own bad twin inside of us. The whole time I read the
book I kept thinking of Jack and Sawyer and Sawyer's statement
way back in Episode 1.7, The Moth that "The difference
between [Sawyer and Jack] ain't that big, sweetheart." And here
at the end of Season 3 we could see some of that with
the BBQ-providing, baby-complimenting Sawyer who went back to
the beach and the so myopic, especially when it comes to Juliet,
he's dangerous to the group, Jack.

Smokey?

I just watched What Kate Did and I'm more confused than
ever when it comes to this Island and what's going on. Is
this horse seen by Kate alone at the beginning of the episode
when she hasn't had any sleep and has been worried about
Sawyer Smokey?

How about "Why did you kill me?" Wayne-channeling Sawyer?
Something happened to lead to Sawyer being on the ground.
Just crazy Kate or more?

And what about the black horse seen by both Kate and Sawyer
and actually touched by Kate? By the way, I think it neighed
backwards. Just kidding.

In all, okay more, seriousness, Smokey has had past run-ins
with Kate both in The Pilot and in the S1 finale. So is this
horse the smoke monster in the form of a horse or is it one
of the Others' horses on the loose? Is it the same horse that
appeared in the flashback setting Kate free to run from the
Marshal? Or is it just a similar horse like Sayid's cat in S3?
Finally, if the horse in the flashback permitted Kate to run
why does she now interpret its appearance as permission to
stop running?

There have been recent discussions regarding Mrs. Hawking's
time rules and Damon Lindelof's statement that they apply.
I wish we had someone to elaborate on the rules of Smokey.

Should Exodus Have Been Called
Death Wish?

Why did Sawyer want to be on the raft? Michael suggests
a death wish in light of his father's death when Sawyer was
only eight. Was Michael right?

But for the fact that at least half the female audience would
stop watching immediately, I'd suggest it might be time to
fulfill Sawyer's death wish now that his reason for living,
revenge on the real Sawyer, has been accomplished. His last
encounter with Kate in Season 3 seems to put him back
where he was on the raft with nothing on the Island
worth staying for.

Outstanding Questions from Outlaws

There are a few loose ends left over after Outlaws:

1. Will we ever find out what happened between Sawyer
and Hibbs in the Tampa job? (Do we care?)

2. Hibbs says that he and Sawyer both know Sawyer's not
not the killing type, so why con Sawyer into killing
Duckett? Seems like Hibbs would know an actual killer
that could have handled the job. This reminds me of
Jin's mis-delivered message to the government official
that led to Sun getting a dog.

3. If Smokey is at work in this episode, when would it
have had an opportunity to scan Sawyer? My answer --
Vincent is Smokey.

4. What did Kate do between high school and killing Wayne
since she wasn't in college?

5. Why did they change Sawyer's hometown between this
episode and The Brig? Sawyer tells Duckett he's from
Tennessee like that would mean something to the real
Sawyer, but now he's from Jasper, Alabama. I'm willing
to take a job doing continuity if TPTB need it. Here's
a nutty idea. Maybe Desmond traveling back in time
changed it.

Smoke(y)d Pig?

Outlaws is an unusual episode. It opens
with Sawyer dreaming about what happened when his
father shot his mother and then himself all while
little Sawyer hid under the bed. When Sawyer
wakes on the Island, there's a boar in his tent
rummaging through his things and later running off
with his tarp. When Sawyer chases the big pig, he finds
himself in a clearing with The Whispers all around him.

When Sawyer and Kate are camping in the jungle on the
trail of the pig, Sawyer again dreams of that moment in
his childhood and when he wakes up, again a boar has
rifled his things and even peed on his shirt. So what is
going on here? Is Smokey drawing Sawyer out as he
might have led Jack as Christian to find the caves or
Eko as Yemmi to his death?

The thing this more reminds me of is Locke's dream in
Deus Ex Machina that leads Locke and Boone to the
Nigerian drug plane. Did Sawyer's dream lead to the
manifestation of the boar? Did Locke's dream produce
the plane? And while you're figuring that out, which came
first, the chicken or the egg?

And how does Sawyer's underlying guilt of being used by
Hibbs play into this? Sawyer thought he was getting his
revenge when he shot Duckett, but learned he was wrong.
He didn't take his revenge on the boar, but he ultimately
takes his revenge on the real Sawyer. So did it all come
back around?

Hero or Villain?

While listening to the Michael Emerson interview in
Episode 93 of Comic News Insider Emerson said he's
always assumed despite all evidence to the contrary that
Ben is going to turn out to be a hero. What do you think?
Are the following Heroes or Villains?

  • Benjamin Linus
  • Jack Shephard
  • John Locke
  • Kate Austen
  • James "Sawyer" Ford
  • Juliet Burke
  • The Island
  • Jacob
  • Smokey
