This has caused me to wonder as well. Charlie always wants peple to believe and trust him, especially in the face of appearances making him look untrustworthy. So TPTB making Charlie be the one to not trust or believe Hurley was interesting to say the least.
Charlie had some preconceived notions about what that much money would do to a person, and Hurley just didn't fit the image. Where are all the nice clothes, the nose in the air, the attitude (you know, like Shannon!)? Hurley is still a real guy, good friend, just himself. I'm sure Charlie would have eventually understood and accepted Hugo's fortune, but alas he'll never get that chance.
Good point Amused, and Charlie's experience with making it big in the rock world showed him that people often succumb to excesses like drugs and drink when they become wealthy. And Hurley isn't anything like that either.
