Is This Enough Reason To Take This Job?

Why on earth would Juliet agree to work for a company after her ex-husband was hit by a bus after she told the recruiter that's what it would take to "free" her? What's more they visit her at the morgue. And they know her sister is pregnant. And she can't bring her sister with her because they have what she needs to do her "cutting edge science," but not to treat cancer? It must be the lure of the eyliner.

Re-watching Not in Portland I also wondered how the heck can Jack ever trust Juliet when she so easily ordered Sawyer and Kate's deaths just because Ben's been keeping her on the Island? He must somehow know intuitively that she's the type of woman who'll allow her ex-husband to keep her as his emergency contact.

That's something Jack seems to value.

Have a fun New Year's Eve and Day! I'll be back the 2nd.

In reading your post, I can't help but realize that the wierdest part of that is that they didn't want the sister. They wanted her to do this research on pregnant women and yet they are completely opposed to her bringing her pregnant sister to the island. Did they know the sister would die? Or did they know that she wouldn't because she conceived off-island?

I agree. Wouldn't they want to see if impregnating Rachel was succesful? Especially given that the male mouse wasn't?

Good question memphish. It has always bothered me that they knew about Rachel's pregnancy.
I think Juliet took the job becuase she was in shock and vulnerable at the time. Or Richards beautiful liner filled eyes convinced her.

Juliet is such a mystery. I am dying to find out how she became the strong woman we see on the island.

Have a great New Year's!

And to you too Yessifer! It does seem as if Juliet doesn't have much time to make her decision. I don't believe Rachel is visibly preggers when Jules downs her OJ.

Those are good questions. They did show that Juliet was kind of an emotional mess at the time ... maybe she thought that the job was a way to escape from her ex-husband's shadow. It would give her a chance to get away from some of the emotional fallout from the relationship and his death. It would also give her a chance to establish herself professionally, again out of his shadow (they kind of implied that her breakthrough with the sister was the intellectual property of the ex's company, which I would assume would continue after his death).

Although, her sister had been sick with cancer, Juliet comes up with a major breakthrough to allow her to conceive, and less than 2 months into the pregnancy ... she gets up and leaves to work for a company that won't letter even be in contact? Seems a little unbelievable, not to mention irresponsible and maybe even unethical.

Happy New Year's to all!

It was totally Richard's eyeliner - She may have taken the job to escape the situation where she felt responsible for Edmond being hit by a bus.

She's a fertility specialist, and we don't fully know what it was they offered her. Richard did say she would be back in time for Rachael to give birth (another lie out of the mouth's of others).

Something unrelated to this post, but having to do with Ben's lies - Ben told Jack he would get him "off this island". Well, they were on Alcatraz, and Ben certainly did get him off that island. He didn't say in that dialogue that he would get him home.

All I knoww is that scientists reeeeeeally like to be able to do their work, and to get the chance to make strides in their particular field. Sometime they are very willing to take the bad with the good, just to get the research opportunity of a lifetime, that would never come around again. ???

P.S. Happy New Year Memphish! :-D

I think the thing I have the hardest part with when it comes to Juliet is understanding this scientific drive that trumps caring for her sister. Maybe you're right Trevor that her desire to leave is in part to avoid questions about her "private" research. I think that I can get that better than other motivations.

there was a little bit of dialogue about Juliet being apprehensive to leave Rachel, but Rachel gave her a pep talk about the Mittelos job being the opportunity of a lifetime. In TV-dom, a well placed pep talk can trump all reason.

Also, it seemed like Juliet was a glorified lab tech and she was really taken aback to be offered the position she was with Mittelos. When it came time to drink the orange juice, Alpert said something to the effect of 'you will never get an opportunity like this again. If you don't drug yourself you're going to lead an unremarkable life and regret this moment for the rest of your life.'

on the upside for her, she's now a badass ninja warrior.

Did they actually tell Juliet that she would see Rachel again soon? I forget. That would make a difference. And wasn't it only supposed to be for a few months or so? Juliet didn't know that she was leaving forever, she thought that she would be back home again soon.

Also, research can benefit a lot of people, so maybe medical research is like Star Trek...the needs of the many outway the needs of the few?

Or, it's time for that suspension of disbelief segment of our show. :o)

Heheh, your post wasn't up yet before I posted Andrew...all very good points!!! :-D

Oops, I meant outweigh. :-p

All right in fairness to Juliet (as much as that pains me) she did think she'd be back with Rachel before the baby was due. And there were those neat-o outings Alpert mentioned. But doing research in an environment where you can't phone home just raises so many red flags to me. You'll be doing cutting edge work, but no phones and no email. Things that would make me go hmmm.

Happy New Year everyone!

NEW LOST THIS MONTH!!!!! Squeeeees!

I also agree with most of you that the lure of unlimited research and being able to do what you want is very tempting. Richard did tell her that she'd be back in time to see Rachel deliver (big lie), so with Rachel telling her to go and "win one for the Gipper", she went willingly.

memphish said...

Alpert also told her she was "special." That claim seems to blind most people on this show.

To be able to do her research without interference from the outside world - no phone calls, no bills, no letters, and a good excuse why she can't communicate. I have to confess that I've occasionally taken assignments where the thought of 'no-cell service' was actually a pro, not a con. It meant I could focus. If she thought her research was important enough, maybe what we're thinking of as a negative was actually a positive for her.

Richard did give her an out. When she expressed doubt or apprehension about taking the drug, he asked her why she was okay with the offer, because they weren't paying her that much.

It seemed to be almost a pride type of thing for her as she grabbed the glass away from him and downed it in one gulp.

BTW, Happy new year everyone!
