Will The Diamonds Ever Matter?
This post could be subtitled "Will Nikki and Paolo Ever Matter," but I'm pretty sure the answer to that is no. The diamonds on the other hand have their own value. There's been some speculation that they could relate to the current ARG though recent revelations make that less likely. I doubt that even Sawyer will bother to collect them before anyone tries to leave the Island. Despite the fact that it is at times quite amusing, all in all an episode and its props best put behind us.

I love when Nikki says 'Paralyzed' but they think she is saying 'Paulo lies' lol that was a great twist.
I really would like to know where that storyline was supposed to go if there hadn't been such outraged backlash regarding the clunky introduction. Or was the diamond storyline their story all along and it was just supposed to play out slowly as a B-storyline over the course of the season.
This was one episode I watched with the commentary turned on (S3 DVDs). It was an interesting one to listen to.
I still feel bad for the Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro. They played their parts well, and I could have endured more of Paulo's beefcakeness...it's too bad the characters were handled so badly. Nikki was so shallow, worse than Shannon, but Paulo (for me) was a very sympathetic character. He really did love Nikki, and I think they would have eventually made it together. But, alas, it would have meant a much different Lost.
As for the diamonds...I still think what Locke said applies: Things don't stay buried on the Island. We will see them again.
I felt sorry for the actors too, but I bet they can have fun and make extra bucks showing up at all the future LostCons for the next 30 years. Their characters are cemented in Lost history, even if in a bad light. Those are the best convention guest stars, the characters ya love to hate. :o)
When Sawyer sprinkled the diamonds over the grave, it just felt as if someday they would be sorry that they did that. Someone might be going back to dig them up to use as bargaining power with the New Hostiles.
lost2010,
The Nikki/Paulo story was always going to go in this direction, it would have just taken many more episodes. For instance, there would would have been one episode where the flashback was an episode of "Expose," one where we'd see why Nikki and Paulo were really in Australia, one where we re-experience the events of the island from their perspective, an EC/comics murder mystery episode, etc. The idea was to create a sort of metafictional, in-jokey ongoing subplot. Their episode as it stands now is just a consolidation of all the writers' ideas for the duo. They were never going to play a significant role in the story's mythology.
Oh, well in that case, it's just as well they killed them off sooner rather than later.
As far as the diamonds go, I can't see Sawyer burying all the diamonds. I figure if he ever makes it off that island, he'll have a few tucked away.
That wouldn't surprise me either Lost 2010.
If I were on that island and I knew a helicopter were coming to pick me up (even if it was an evil helicopter) I'd dig up those diamonds faster than Superman with a backhoe.
I do agree with Lost 2010 though - Sawyer's got to have some stashed away somewhere.
I knew I'd picked the right focus of this post -- it's the diamonds, not the people. ;-D
I don't think this has anything to do with anything, as far as the main story is concerned. The diamonds are not important in the grand scheme of things. However, I do think we'll see Nikki/Paulo again, just for fun.
Heheh, I would respect TPTB a lot if they somehow threw in one more scene with N&P, just to spite us. :o)
I don't think that we'll ever see the diamonds again, especially now that there's a set end date. I think that Nikki and Paolo were brought in basically to give TPTB someone else to flashback about if the series went 5 or 6 full years. I don't think that they really had any larger role in the big picture mythology or in what happens with the core characters; now that they're gone, I bet that they and their plotline stays buried.
Wouldn't mind seeing more of Nikki, though. Razzle-dazzle!
